If you were promised champagne on a Sunwing flight between 2014 and 2017, you could be entitled to a Sunwing discount. A Quebec court has approved a settlement in a class action lawsuit that alleged the airline advertised champagne to Quebec customers but only served sparkling wine.

The problem, plaintiffs argued, is that the designation "champagne" is protected, meaning it can only be applied to select products that meet specific standards of production. Sparkling wine, they said, is a lesser product. The plaintiffs therefore charged that Sunwing violated the Quebec Consumer Protection Act.

Exactly one year ago, a group of wayward Quebec influencers and reality television stars was floundering in Mexico after their mid-air, mid-COVID debauchery on a Sunwing flight to Cancun made headlines across Canada. Quebecers might remember some of the story's principal characters, namely eccentric trip organizer James William Awad and the woman seen on video vaping aboard the aircraft, aspiring pilot Vanessa Sicotte.

The absolutely ridiculous story would inevitably become a feature on Bye Bye 2022, Radio-Canada's sketch comedy recap of the previous year. Sicotte shared her reaction to the parody with Narcity Québec.

In a story that just keeps getting delightfully weirder, ex-Montreal mayoral candidate and Mouvement Montréal leader Balarama Holness has challenged Sunwing Party flight guy James William Awad to a five-round MMA fight.

Asked by MTL Blog if this was an April Fool's joke, Holness replied, "no it is not. 100% serious." So this is where we're at now.

As of March 28, the Government of Canada has issued a total of 24 fines to passengers aboard the December 30 Quebec Sunwing flight to Cancun. The chartered flight made international headlines after videos from the cabin showed passengers, including local influencers and celebrities, partying maskless in their seats and the aisle.

But as Transport Canada continues its crackdown, James William Awad, the flamboyant and enigmatic flight organizer, says passengers have no plans to pay penalties. Instead, they aim to challenge them.
