The Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Saint-Justine just released safety guidelines for children and their parents looking to go sledding this winter — in particular, choosing sledding locations carefully, always sledding with adult supervision and always wearing a helmet.

Sledding activities have become more popular since the beginning of the pandemic, as kids and teens are looking for more opportunities to get out of the house and have some fun. With this increased time outdoors, there's an increased risk of injury, as the CHU Sainte-Justine has seen.

With fewer activity options than maybe ever in the city of Montreal, the Montreal's Children's Hospital Trauma Centre is reporting "a record high number of children and teens injured while sledding and tobogganing this winter."

The hospital says that the number of children in sledding accidents so far this season is already equal to seasonal totals for some years.

Mayor Valérie Plante recently announced the city's plan for winter in Montreal, unveiling new winter "resorts" in 17 boroughs as well as winter sporting activities at every major park.

All major parks will have cross-country skiing, hiking and snowshoeing trails. 

This year, you'll also be able to reserve equipment, such as snowshoes, online — free for Montrealers 18 and under.
