Quebec Has Confirmed Its First Case Of A New Indian COVID-19 Variant

Quebec has confirmed its first case of a new COVID-19 virus variant, B.1.617, which was identified in India. 

The CIUSSS de la Mauricie-et-du-Centre-du-Québec (MCQ) told MTL Blog that the B.1.617 COVID-19 variant strain is the first of its kind in the province, and that it was found in the Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec region.

Quebec Public Health Official Says Current Measures Are 'Insufficient' To Control Variants

COVID-19 virus variants are projected to become Quebec's most prevalent strains by early April, according to a new report by the Institut national de santé publique (INSPQ). 

The report says that the B.1.1.7 variant strain, identified in the U.K., and the B.1.351 variant strain, identified in South Africa, "will soon represent more than 50% of new COVID-19 cases in Quebec."

Quebec Has Confirmed Its First COVID-19 Case With 'The New Variant'

In a statement issued Tuesday morning, the ministry of health and social services confirmed that officials had identified the first known case in Quebec of a new COVID-19 variant, known as variant S.
