If you see a large snake, don't panic. A python is missing in Gatineau and police are trying to reassure the public.

Its owner called authorities on July 10 to report the loss of their pet but the metre-long snake had already been loose in Hull’s Hautes-Plains neighbourhood for several days, announced Gatineau police on Monday.

The Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) would like to reassure the population about the possible presence of a python on the loose

The owner put up several posters throughout the community warning residents of the missing snake and promising a reward to anyone who found the animal.

After consulting the Outaouais SPCA, police announced the ball python does not pose a threat to people.

Police are inviting anyone who sees the python to call (819) 246-0222.

If you spot the snake, do not try and pick it up as this species does not like to be touched, say police.

According to allreptiles.ca, ball pythons are popular pets because they are relatively quiet and "docile." They like to roll themselves up in a ball when threatened, hence the name.

They’re mainly nocturnal, so keep an eye out if you’re jogging around Gatineau at night.
