The Montreal Canadiens have announced that Dominique Ducharme will stick around as head coach for another three seasons after signing a contract extension.

Ducharme, who was the interim head coach for the duration of the last season, can now remove the "interim" from his title.

He will officially be the 31st head coach in Canadiens history.

Ducharme, of course, led the team to a surprising and exciting run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Hired as an assistant to former head coach Claude Julien, Ducharme was promoted as interim head coach after Julien was dismissed in February 2021.

"While our team has gone through its fair share of adversity, [Ducharme] has shown a lot of control over the situation as well as showing calm and great leadership," said Habs GM Marc Bergevin.

"These are important qualities that we look for in a head coach and he fully deserves the chance to lead our team and take it to the next level."
