Montreal has officially spiked the annual North America's 50 Best Bars list with a little local flavour. The spirited showdown of top watering holes across the continent, from Canada to the Caribbean, saw Montreal bars take a double shot at the prestigious ranking and both land.

The competition was stiff, featuring the best from nightlife capitals like New York, Las Vegas, and Mexico City. As the largest city — and one of the only on the continent — to resist prohibition in the early 20th century, it’s no surprise that Montreal (then nicknamed "Paris of the North" and "Sin City") maintains its reputation as a first-rate place to knock back some booze. From student-packed dives on Saint-Laurent to ritzy speakeasies to 5 à 7s at neighbourhood wine bars, Montrealers are getting hammered at some of the finest drinkeries on this side of the Atlantic.

But don’t just take our word for it. 50 Best, described on its site as "the leading authority in global gastronomy and the international drinks scene," ranked two Montreal bars among the best in North America this year. The same organization has 15 Montreal establishments on its expanded list of exceptional local bars and restaurants to discover (well, 16 if you count the recently shuttered Maison Publique — RIP… pour one out for Publique).

The people behind some of Montreal's trendiest, award-winning bars have launched a new venture. Bon Délire, described by Groupe Barroco as a "curated dive bar with an elevated twist," opened in Saint-Henri this spring.

Owners say they have replicated the feeling of classic '90s "hole-in-the-wall" dive, complete with a "hazy, neon-lit bar," leopard-print pool table, free popcorn and space for live performances. But they also promise some Groupe Barroco "signature touches."

Montreal ranks highly on plenty of top-tier lists, but perhaps none more culinarily influential than the 50 Best lists, which rate restaurants and bars across the world. Three of Montreal's best restaurants and one bar have made it to the site for the first time — but not in the way you might expect.

The new rankings come from the 50 Best: Discovery section, where high-level restaurants and bars that received votes in the 50 Best lists are highlighted. To be included in the Discovery section, an establishment needs to have been chosen by the experts and critics whose votes determine the top 50 lists the site is known for.
