Dinette Triple Crown, a beloved Montreal restaurant in Little Italy known for its Southern-style comfort food and pre-packed picnic baskets, has closed its doors for good.
An announcement on May 25 marked the end of a 12-year era for the community eatery, cherished for its fried chicken and waffles, creamy mac 'n' cheese, and buttery biscuits with gravy.
Owners Colin and Nicole shared a heartfelt message to customers, expressing gratitude for the support and memories over the years. They also included personal thank-yous to key staff members who played vital roles in the restaurant's success.
"We are sorry we didn’t get a chance to say goodbye in person but it would have been too difficult," the note reads.
The restaurant, located at St. Zotique and Clark, aimed to be a "neighbourhood spot," they said, and it succeeded in becoming a place of celebration and comfort for many. Their vintage-style menus, filled with humourous retro graphics, showcased an ever-changing selection of dishes that always tasted homemade.
The owners cited pandemic-time challenges of 2022 and 2023 as significant factors in their decision to close. The space had been shut since the start of 2024, with a post on Instagram stating it was "not able to open."
The closure has prompted an outpouring of heartfelt replies from patrons. One customer wrote, "Heartbreaking news, will spend the rest of my life trying to duplicate your mac 'n’ cheese and collard greens."
"As a person from the southern US, your dishes truly hit the spot, especially in the middle of winter when home seemed so far away. Thank you for all those years of hard work and absolutely delicious meals," commented another.
"You were the best restaurant in Montreal, from the atmosphere of the place, the quality and flavour of the food, the kindness coming out of that place was limitless. Thank you for everything. Montreal [is] gonna miss you," shared a fan.
While you won't be able to get any more of their delectable mac 'n' cheese, the restaurant's Peach & Habanero Hot Sauce will still be available for purchase online, keeping a piece of Dinette Triple Crown alive for a while longer.
