Montreal's food scene has plenty of restaurants that'll make your head spin, but only one that does it for real.

At first glance, Portus 360 looks like another sleek spot perched high above downtown. But spend a little time inside and you’ll notice something unusual happening: the entire dining room is moving.

Poutine is one of the first things people think of when they think of Canada—especially Quebec and especially Montreal. It's our beef and potatoes, so to speak.

Locals enjoy it, but because of poutine’s icon status, it's exceedingly popular among tourists, too, and touristy eats can get pricey. I'm a cheapskate, but I still want to enjoy the occasional serving of fries, curds, and gravy. So, I set out on a quest to find Montreal's cheapest poutine.

Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably already know that Montreal is full of fantastic restaurants.

From internationally acclaimed kitchens to local neighbourhood favourites, the city has no shortage of great food. But not every spot makes it onto a travel guide or TikTok itinerary for out-of-towners.

Montreal’s pizza scene is always evolving. And one of its most exciting new contenders is operating out of a space smaller than most living rooms.

Tucked into a 400-square-foot space above a paint shop in Montreal's Lachine borough, Forno Pizza Frankie's doesn't look like much at first glance. There are no tables, no dining room, and no neon signs. But inside, two brothers are quietly crafting some of the best pies in the city. Donny and Daniele Mellozzi opened the takeout-only spot in August 2023. It's not a traditional restaurant, though. And that's by design.

It's a great time to be a dog owner in Montreal.

With grocery prices continuing to rise, even everyday items like eggs have become more expensive. According to Statistics Canada, the average retail price for a dozen eggs in Canada was $4.42 in June 2024, and it went up to $4.85 by November.

But if you're willing to venture just outside Montreal, you can grab fresh, farm-raised eggs at Pondoir HDJJ in Repentigny for a great price. The farm, run by the Guillemette-Claude family, sells its eggs for only $3.50 per dozen, but the real bargain is buying in bulk — $8.75 for 30 eggs, which works out to just 29 cents each. That's a steal compared to what you'd pay in stores.

One thing tourists often remark on when visiting Montreal is how "old" the city feels.

Whether that's a compliment or not isn't always clear— are they admiring the charm of the Old Port or commenting on the pothole-ridden streets across the island? Either way, Montreal's rich history is undeniable, and it's not just in the architecture. It's also in the city's restaurants, many of which have been serving up local favourites for generations.

For those of you who've lived in Montreal long enough, there's bound to be at least one shuttered eatery you wish still existed — if only to stop you from salivating every time you pass by its old location.

We recently asked Montrealers to get nostalgic and share the beloved restaurants and fast-food chains they miss the most, and let's just say they had big feelings about it... almost as big as Taco Bell's 'Big Cheez-It Crunchwrap Supreme' (yes, that's a hint).

In a city known for having North America's second-highest number of restaurants per capita, keeping up with the latest and greatest eats in Montreal can be a daunting task. That's why annual restaurant rankings (when done well) are lifesavers for Montreal foodies trying to sniff out their next must-try meal.

While some rankings are curated by critics, who may or may not share your palate, OpenTable's new list of Canada's Top 100 Restaurants of 2024 leverages reviews and metrics from verified users of its online reservation system. As OpenTable puts it on its website: "This one is driven by diners [...] just like you."
