montreal orange line

A new "pink" Montreal metro line was supposed to one day provide new rapid transit between Montréal-Nord, downtown and Lachine. More than six years after Mayor Valérie Plante and her party, Projet Montréal, began campaigning on the proposal to radically expand the metro network, Plante says the project is beginning to take shape — though it hardly resembles the original plan.

Here's the recent history of the proposal, how it has changed and where it could go from here.

2022 was a big year for Montreal transit. 2023 could be even bigger. With a Montreal metro extension charging ahead, the opening of the first branch of the highly anticipated Réseau express métropolitain (REM) and several other projects either already under construction, in the planning stages or otherwise on the table, Montrealers could see some monumental changes in the next decade. Some could fundamentally reshape the city.

This map shows what the network could look like when construction is done — and if some projects in the works actually come to fruition.

Montreal is expecting as many as 12,000 delegates to descend on the city for the United Nations biodiversity conference, COP15, taking place at the Palais des congrès from December 7 to 19. Some will last into January.

The STM reopened Square-Victoria-OACI station on the Montreal metro's orange line Wednesday morning after flooding forced its temporary closure Tuesday evening. Videos shared with Narcity Québec and MTL Blog show water covering the station's mezzanine and, in some spots, pouring in from the ceiling and bubbling up from the floor.

The STM closed the station at around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday due to the water infiltration. Trains coming from both directions had to skip the usually busy downtown stop.

Québec solidaire has released an ambitious plan for transit expansion in the Montreal area. Among the proposals is a new "purple" metro line from Laval to Ville-Marie via Montréal-Nord, Rosemont and the Plateau—Mont-Royal. The party says it would invest a whopping $47 billion by 2030 to put the plan into action if it's able to form a government after the 2022 Quebec election.

The "purple" line resembles other proposals for a rapid transit link between Montréal-Nord and downtown that bypasses the crowded Berri-UQAM station, including Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante's signature "pink line" project and more recent designs for a new light-rail line.

The STM ceased service on parts of three metro lines Thursday morning. The transit company said the interruptions came after smoke was detected.

UPDATE: Service has resumed or is resuming on all lines.

Montreal pro tip: don't do your hair until after you're off the metro. Montrealers know the struggle of using all their body weight to force open their metro station's doors only to get smacked in the face by a blinding gust of wind that smells like the city's stale, dusty bowels.

So why does entering an STM metro station feel like an amusement park ride? The transit company took to Instagram to share the answer in an eye-opening explainer video on its ventilation system and methods.
