Netflix plans on phasing out its cheapest no-ad subscription across Canada starting in quarter two.
In a report distributed on January 23, 2024, with Netflix shareholders, the streaming company detailed its intentions to fully eliminate its basic no-ads plan, which Netflix users across Canada currently pay $9.99 per month.
Netflix has been making a slew of changes to its platform over the course of the last couple of years, including password sharing. Last year, Netflix cracked down on shared accounts, limiting the ability to share your Netflix account solely with those in the same household using the same Wi-Fi connection.
Netflix is taking things a step further with the elimination of its basic no-ads subscription. The streaming platform first phased out the plan to new users last summer, still allowing existing members to take advantage of the $9.99 monthly cost.
Now, as of Netflix's second quarter in 2024, the basic no-ads plan will be no more for all users, new and existing.
"The ads plan now accounts for 40% of all Netflix sign-ups in our ads markets and we’re looking to retire our Basic plan in some of our ads countries, starting with Canada and the UK in Q2 and taking it from there," Netflix said.
Although Netflix has not confirmed an exact date by which the basic no-ads plan will be no longer, it will likely take effect this spring as most companies roll into their second quarter.
Before the news dropped, Netflix Canada offered four plans: Basic With Ads, Basic, Standard and Premium.
The basic ad-supported feature, which costs $5.99 per month in Canada, will remain available. For those who subscribe to a plan without ads, your only options are the standard plan, which costs $16.49 a month or the premium membership, which runs for $20.99 per month.
