At a press conference on Monday, Quebec Premier François Legault said that he was "not in favour" of instituting a statutory holiday dedicated to Indigenous people, saying Quebec already has a lot of holidays.

"There's still a lot of work to do for reconciliation with Indigenous people," the premier added. "We are coordinating with the federal government to do the necessary research into the residential schools that are here in Quebec."

Indigenous people can now reclaim their traditional names on official travel and immigration documents such as Canadian passports. 

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action number 17 called on the government to "enable residential school Survivors and their families to reclaim names changed by the residential school system by waiving administrative costs for a period of five years." This action was finally adopted on June 14, 2021.

Nakuset, director of the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, announced on Twitter that a "commemorative drumming" will be held at Parc Jeanne-Mance at 7 p.m. in memory of the 215 Indigenous children whose remains were found buried at a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.

The Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation announced the discovery on Thursday.
