Sleep tight, don't let them bite!

If the idea of bed bugs makes you squirm, you might want to avoid the places named on Orkin Canada Pest Control's new list of "Canada's Top Bed Bug Cities."

The report, released Tuesday, ranks the "bed buggiest" cities across the country — and the results have shifted somewhat from previous years.

While Toronto has claimed the top spot for the seventh year in a row, Vancouver seems to have put its extermination practices into full gear as it moved from second place to sixth. Winnipeg moved up to seventh, which is noteworthy considering it wasn't even in the top 10 last year.

Montreal's placement on the list may surprise you. When news of the bed bug crisis in Paris spread a few months ago, there were reports of fear and panic amongst Montrealers given the high degree of travel between the two cities with daily non-stop flights between Charles De Gaulle Airport and Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

However, Montreal did not crack the top 10. In fact, we moved further down the list compared to last year taking 14th place rather than 12th.

Here's the full list of Canadian cities that are most infested with bed bugs:

  1. Toronto
  2. Sudbury
  3. Oshawa
  4. Hamilton
  5. Ottawa
  6. Vancouver
  7. Winnipeg
  8. St. John's
  9. Sault Ste. Marie
  10. Scarborough
  11. Calgary
  12. Edmonton
  13. London
  14. Montreal
  15. Timmins
  16. Windsor
  17. North York
  18. Moncton
  19. Halifax
  20. Etobicoke
  21. Mississauga
  22. Niagara Falls
  23. Prince George
  24. Peterborough
  25. Saskatoon

In a press release, Orkin Canada suggested staying vigilant for "signs and traces of bed bugs," especially while travelling. These include live or dead bugs or the skins they leave behind when they moult as well as "small spots of reddish-black fecal matter on your bedding, mattress or box springs." While bed bugs are visible to the naked eye, they are very small and excellent at hiding making them difficult to spot.

The Orkin Canada bed bug list is created based on the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments performed by the company. The new list was compiled using treatments performed between January 1,2023 and December 31, 2023.
