If you've ever wondered what certain Montreal landmarks would look like in a post-apocalyptic world, then you'll want to check out Tay Baranec's account on Instagram, where he goes by the handle @apocalypse_montreal.

The 39-year-old Montrealer told MTL Blog he started making models a couple of years ago, but he had more time to spend on the project when the pandemic hit and he lost his job as a cook.

Baranec has created post-apocalyptic models of La Banquise, Schwartz's Deli, Club Super Sexe, the Biosphere and more.

Asked about his favourite model to make, he said it "might [...] be Namur metro station," mainly because "crashing a metro car and adding all the tiny rubble was a blast."

However, Baranec said La Banquise has the most "easter eggs," such as the manhole covers, which are the same "Bell Systems" model you see — and walk on top of — around town.

Baranec said he's inspired by daily dog walks along graffiti-littered streets, seeing businesses shutter during the lockdown, the long-term projection of a "terminally capitalistic society," and bad sci-fi movies, along with "a whole mess" of other things.

"The reactions I've gotten so far have been very positive, from graffiti artists thanking me for featuring their work to fans of the places I destroy. [...]  it feels good to know that my work can get people to see the city the way I do," he said.

Baranec said he'd like to see his models in a gallery or an exhibition someday, but for now, he's having fun showcasing his work online and getting the occasional commission.
