A Montreal-Area Man Has Been Charged For 'Advocating Genocide'

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced Monday that it had charged a Montreal-area man for "advocating genocide."

This is the first such charge in Quebec, the federal police service said in a statement.

62-year-old Boucherville resident André Audet made online threats "directed at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Muslim community," the statement continues.

For the first time in Quebec, an RCMP investigation has led to charges of advocating genocide being laid against a Boucherville resident.

Police allege that Audet "used a variety of pseudonyms on a number of social media networks" to post "approximately one hundred hate posts, threats and/or posts inciting violence in the targeted accounts."

"The RCMP takes seriously any threats that can affect one's sense of security. Violent statements will not be tolerated," the statement concludes.

Anyone with illegal activities to report is encouraged to contact the RCMP at 514-939-8300/1-800-771-5401.
