In a statement published Monday, Health Minister Christian Dubé announced that two more areas of Quebec are entering the red zone.

The MRCs of Joliette and D'Autray, both in the Lanaudière region, will see bars and restaurants close as of 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, October 22 (the night between Wednesday and Thursday).

Red zone rules "concerning the school and sports environment will come into effect on Friday, October 23," the statement says.

"In certain sectors of the Lanaudière region, we are seeing an increase in community transmission, and we must take the necessary steps to slow this spread," the minister explained.

"Each person must limit their social contacts," he said.

"It is all together that we will be able to stop the spread of the virus."

Joliette and d'Autray join much of Quebec, including the Montreal metropolitan community (CMM) and the Capitale-Nationale, in the red zone.

In Montreal, some red zone restrictions are scheduled to end after October 28, but Premier François Legault has suggested that others will persist beyond that date.
