The safest countries in the world were recently ranked and Canada's score certainly makes it a worthwhile destination for visitors.

HelloSafe, an online Canadian insurance company, ranked the safest countries in the world in 2024, and while Canada may not have come out number one, the true north certainly has much to be proud of.

HelloSafe created an index designed to assess the overall safety of global countries through an in-depth analysis based on a set of 35 criteria grouped into five main categories: the occurrence of natural disasters, violence in society, involvement in internal or external armed conflicts, health infrastructure and militarization of the country.

For a country to be deemed "very safe" it must have scored less than 30 points, while a "safe" ranking must be between 30 and 45 points. Any country with 45 to 60 points is deemed "unsafe" while those with more than 60 points are ranked as "dangerous."

Per HelloSafe, Iceland is the safest country in the world in 2024, with a score of 18.23 points. Singapore (19.99), Denmark (20.05), Austria (20.31), and Switzerland (20.51), all made up the remainder of the top five.

So, how did Canada perform?

Canada managed to score a "safe" ranking with a total of 40.03. While several European and Asian countries managed to score higher than Canada, including Ireland (22.49), Bhutan (22.98), Qatar (23.33), and Portugal (25.01), Canada's score is impressive when compared to the United States.

The U.S. was a mere 0.53 points away from being ranked among the most "dangerous" countries. However, with a score of 59.47 points, the U.S. remains marked in the "unsafe" category.

Speaking of the most dangerous countries in the world, the HelloSafe Index indicated that Russia (75.65), India (77.86), Mexico (78.42), Colombia (79.21), and the Philippines (82.32) are among the top five most dangerous worldwide.

Wondering which other countries made the cut? Here's the complete top 15 of the safest countries in the world, per HelloSafe:

  1. Iceland
  2. Singapore
  3. Denmark
  4. Austria
  5. Switzerland
  6. Czech Republic
  7. Slovenia
  8. Finland
  9. Ireland
