Canada recently ranked among the safest countries to visit, and if you're wondering which cities are the most secure, put Montreal on your list.

Berkshire Hathaway's travel insurance subsidiary, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) recently ranked the safest cities to travel to in 2024 and the city in Quebec was just one spot shy of taking the lead.

BHTP compiled 31 popular international and domestic cities for U.S. travellers from sources like Expedia, USA Today, and Forbes. Only travellers who had visited these cities ranked them on safety measures. They then added the latest safe-cities index from The Economist, ratings from GeoSure Global, and the Current Crime Index from Numbeo, weighing all factors to get the final result.

Montreal improved its ranking, moving from the third safest city to travel to in 2023 to the second safest in 2024. Per Berkshire Hathaway, Montreal received an overall survey score of 80.7. In fact, BHTP highlighted Montreal's transportation safety as the reason why we scored so high.

Despite placing second, a score Montrealers can be proud of, one can only wonder… who beat us?

Honolulu, Hawaii managed to take the top spot, jumping from 12th in 2023 to first this year with an overall survey score of 83.2 According to BHTP, Honolulu received the top score for women's safety and LGBTQ+ travellers.

  2. Montreal, Quebec
  3. Reykjavik, Iceland
