best bars in canada

The best bars in the world were recently ranked and Canada has much to be proud of. Despite not ranking in the top 100, a total of 14 Canadian bars from coast to coast managed to secure a spot on the esteemed list.

Top 500 Bars released its annual global ranking of the best bars in the world and Canada got some major love. "We aggregated the data from over two thousand sources on the web, in more than twenty languages. When it comes to some of the best bars in the world, Montreal has got some must-try spots. In fact, five Montreal bars were ranked among the best across the globe.

There's no denying Montreal's eat and drink scene is unlike any other city in Canada. Heck, North America even. With countless award-winning restaurants, delish spots for a casual bite, or must-visit bars for a cocktail or two, Montreal really does have it all.

From the colourful neon signs illuminating the streets to the irresistible aroma of mixology wizardry, Montreal's bar scene exudes a magnetic charm unlike any other city across the true north and a recent ranking of the 50 best bars in Canada is proof of just that.

Canada's 100 Best released its annual list of Canada's 50 Best Bars and Montreal earned itself eight entries, with two spots landing in the top three. "This year’s edition of Canada’s 50 Best Bars celebrates drinking establishments of all types — from swanky speakeasies to cheerful public houses," the magazine wrote.

Each year, 50 Best publishes lists of the top bars in the world — this year, Montreal got a pitiful zero entries on that list, despite boasting myriad mixologists and plenty of well-loved watering holes. But in North America, the city has a better shot. Two Montreal bars made it to the 2022 50 Best bars in North America, and those in the know won't be surprised by who made the cut.

Highest-up for Montreal is El Pequeño, coming in 29th place. El Pequeño is a classic Cuban bar which opened in 2018 in Montreal's Old Port. Its name translates to "The Small One," which is apt considering the bar's 150 square foot interior. It was co-designed by a cabinet maker, which makes sense — it's not much bigger than a swanky walk-in closet!

A ranking of the 50 best bars in North America was released in early June and two Montreal bars made the cut. El Pequeño Bar on rue Saint-Vincent in Old Montreal — which claims the title of "Canada's smallest bar" — came in at number 29. Cloakroom Bar on rue de la Montagne downtown nabbed 45th place.

The ranking is the latest from the publishing company William Reed. It compiled the list using input from what it described as 220 "bar industry experts" across the continent. The experts each ranked a maximum of seven bars they had visited in the previous 18 months.
