The City of Longueuil has decided to relocate some deer that were overpopulating a local park in Quebec rather than carry out a "control operation," as previously planned, that would see them culled.

Mayor of Longueuil Sylvie Parent announced her decision in a Facebook post on November 23. 

The city received severe backlash and threats from Quebecers in response to its decision to euthanize the problematic deer overpopulating Parc Michel-Chartrand and donate the game meat to local food banks.

Last week, MTL Blog reported that the City of Longueuil is planning to carry out a "control operation" to kill problematic deer that have overpopulated Parc Michel-Chartrand.

A petition opposing the deer culling in Longueuil, which has garnered over 35,000 signatures, emerged online as the Miller Zoo offered to house the deer in Frampton rather than let the game meat be donated to local food banks in Quebec.

As Longueuil prepares to cull a group of deer, the Miller Zoo has made a final attempt to keep them alive.

After receiving what the zoo says were many messages from customers, it made a public offer to welcome the deer into its facility in Frampton.

"Ultimately, the decision is not ours," the zoo wrote in a Facebook post. "However we want to offer an alternative to the parties involved."

A park in Longueuil, just across from Montreal, has seen an overwhelming influx of potentially trouble-making deer so the government is planning a "control operation" to take them down — which, sorry to all the animal-lovers out there, does indeed mean they're going to kill them.

But don't fret. In a happy holiday twist that every good deer overpopulation story needs, the meat will be donated to local food banks during the holiday season.
