A Quebec Zoo Has Offered To Save The Destructive Deer That Longueuil Plans On Killing

As Longueuil prepares to cull a group of deer, the Miller Zoo has made a final attempt to keep them alive.

After receiving what the zoo says were many messages from customers, it made a public offer to welcome the deer into its facility in Frampton.

"Ultimately, the decision is not ours," the zoo wrote in a Facebook post. "However we want to offer an alternative to the parties involved."

It also encouraged followers to share the offer "in large numbers."

Longueuil announced on November 10 that it, along with the provincial Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, had decided to euthanize some of the deer in the local Parc Michel-Chartrand, where "deer density remains more than twice as high as the capacity," according to the city.

"The overpopulation of deer in Parc Michel-Chartrand raises issues of territory protection and harmonious cohabitation, in addition to putting the species at risk," it said.

An online petition to stop the slaughter, meanwhile, has almost 29,000 signatures. 

"We believe that there are other ways to treat these animals," the petition states.

"We believe that the possibilities of relocating the deer have not been properly studied and we ask the City of Longueuil and the Quebec Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks to reconsider its inhumane decision, on the principle that all living beings have the right to life."
