It currently takes about 40 minutes by foot to get from the (approximate) shore of Montreal's Centre-Sud neighbourhood to the western shore of Île Sainte-Hélène via the Jacques Cartier Bridge. A proposal to plop an elevator on either side of the bridge would reduce the journey to just over 10 minutes.

Les AmiEs du courant Sainte-Marie, an organization that advocates for better access to the river for residents of Ville-Marie, is putting forward the plan as one way to both improve the pedestrian link to Parc Jean-Drapeau and capitalize on views from the iconic bridge.

The borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles is partnering with the suburbs of Repentigny and Varennes to offer "bike shuttles" across the river this summer. The annual program allows cyclists to explore parks and bike paths at the tip of Montreal Island and on the North and South Shores.

The shuttle boats will make five trips daily between the Antoine-Beaudry house in Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, the Parc de la Commune in Varennes and the Parc Saint-Laurent in Repentigny.

Looking for fun and adventurous things to do near Montreal this summer? I've got you covered with this must-visit destination less than an hour from the Canada-U.S. border.

Although I've journeyed to Plattsburgh, New York a handful of times for the shopping and, of course, American restaurant chains, I've never paid much attention to what else the mountains and rolling hills of Upstate New York hide in their valleys.

The Montreal map can be disorienting for even the best navigators. First, of course, the orientation of our streets so that they're parallel to the Saint Lawrence River means that Montreal's north is more like west and its west is more like south (so Montréal-Ouest is actually directly south of Montréal-Nord, which itself is farther south than Montréal-Est).

Then there's the geography itself: The urban area sits on an archipelago of oddly shaped islands stitched haphazardly together in a web of bridges and tunnels.

Montreal might finally build a pedestrian and bike bridge between the Verdun Beach area and Île des Sœurs, a part of the city that's otherwise difficult to quickly reach without a car.

There's currently no direct link between the two parts of the borough of Verdun. The only pedestrian crossing from Montreal Island to Île des Sœurs is the (albeit wide) protected sidewalk alongside the busy autoroute 15, which passes through the Sud-Ouest borough.

Sotheby's International Realty Canada reports that a home in Senneville on the western tip of Montreal Island is poised to break a record in Quebec.

With a listing price of $19,885,000, it would be the most expensive home ever sold in the province through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), according to Sotheby's. Realtor.com describes the MLS system as a platform that brokers use to create and share listings.

Montreal is getting another beach. On Sunday, Mayor Valérie Plante announced a commitment to open the shore of the Promenade-Bellerive, a riverside park in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, to swimming.

On its website, the city says the park "is the only physical and visual access point to the Saint Lawrence River" in the borough.

There's a proposal to build a massive new beach in Montreal along the Saint Lawrence River in the Ville-Marie neighbourhood of Sainte-Marie.

The beach would sit just north of the Jacques Cartier Bridge. Montrealers would be able to access it from the Parc du Pied-du-Courant via a universally accessible, 60-metre elevated walkway over the CP and Port of Montreal tracks that, right now, form a barrier between the water and neighbourhood.
