It's that magical time of year when Montreal's barren trees begin sprouting buds that bloom into flowers, gradually turning the city into a colourful botanical paradise.

With the magnolias just starting to blossom and cherry blossoms expected in the coming weeks, you may be wondering where in the city you can see your favourite trees this spring.

Creative the STM social media team is. The Montreal metro map got a Star Wars-themed makeover to mark May the Fourth, the unofficial holiday celebrating the beloved sci-fi franchise. Now, if only the metro could move at light speed...

The reimagined map replaces all 68 real station names with Star Wars puns. Pie-IX becomes "C3Pie-IX." Lionel-Groulx is rechristened "Lionel-Grogu." "Chewbaccadie" replaces Acadie. Georges-Vanier is designated "Georges-Lucas."

So far in 2022, Montreal has been rocked by 19 murders, with victims ranging in age from 16 to 75. Twelve were committed using firearms.

Using the SPVM's available information about deadly crime, Narcity Québec created an interactive map of the homicides that have occurred so far in the Montreal region (the City of Montreal and on-island municipalities) this year. Each homicide is labelled with the date it occurred and pertinent details about the crime in French. The first murder of 2022 took place in the Plateau area, where a teenager only 17 years old was shot to death.

Bienvenue à bord the train to complete exasperation with meteoric real estate prices. A map of the Montreal REM (Réseau express métropolitain) showing property price tags around every station might temper your dreams of owning a large, rail transit-accessible home.

The map, put together by local broker Charlyse Amoussou (@immocharlyse) using data from Centris, lists median 2021 and Q1 2022 selling prices for three-bedroom houses in the area around each of the REM's planned 26 stations in Montreal, Laval, the North and South Shores.

A new interactive Montreal map is paving the way for smoother drives and bike rides in the city. The Montreal Pothole Reporting Tool is collecting data to warn drivers and cyclists about the bumpiest paths in the city and to keep an up-to-date record about when they're fixed.

But the site needs more traffic to fill in the gaps. Outside of the downtown, areas like the West Island and Montreal North need more input to complete the picture.

The Montreal map can be disorienting for even the best navigators. First, of course, the orientation of our streets so that they're parallel to the Saint Lawrence River means that Montreal's north is more like west and its west is more like south (so Montréal-Ouest is actually directly south of Montréal-Nord, which itself is farther south than Montréal-Est).

Then there's the geography itself: The urban area sits on an archipelago of oddly shaped islands stitched haphazardly together in a web of bridges and tunnels.

City of Montreal. Island of Montreal. Agglomeration of Montreal. Montreal metropolitan community. All called Montreal. Not all the same thing.

A diagram and map of Montreal by local researcher Raymundo Cassani illustrate all the official definitions that divide the urban area.
