montreal white christmas

Hold onto your hats, folks! As the leaves fall and the temperature cools, many Canadians' eyes are already on the holidays. However, a new Quebec winter forecast for 2024-2025 promises anything but a calm, cozy December.

According to the full 2024-2025 predictions from The Farmers' Almanac, which are reserved for members, winter weather in Quebec will arrive in full force this year, unleashing a chaotic mix of snow, freezing rain, and icy winds right from the start.

Temper whatever hopes you had for a White Christmas; it's gonna be a nail-biter. The Montreal weather forecast for the remainder of the holiday season is coming into clearer view and doesn't look too promising.

As of the time of writing, the Environment Canada forecast for Monday, December 19 through Wednesday, December 21 shows sunny skies and highs at or just below the freezing points, from -2 C to 0 C. That means there could be snow on the ground through at least Thursday, December 22, when the federal meteorological agency so far predicts a high of 1 C and additional snowfall.

Our chances of white Christmas may have just increased. After an unusually warm start to December, the Montreal weather forecast shows the first significant snowfall of the season is on its way this week.

The Environment Canada forecast shows snow beginning the night of Thursday, December 15. However, that precipitation could also manifest as rain. Either way, the snow is really projected to start on Friday, December 16. Despite projected temperatures hovering around freezing on Friday, as much as 10 centimetres could fall on the city over the course of the day, according to The Weather Network.

"The question people tend to ask us is, 'Will it snow on Christmas?'" said Simon Legault, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

But that's not really the right question this early in the season — it's too soon to tell. "What's certain is that it will rain today and tomorrow," Legault continued. Accurate long-distance predictions are difficult to achieve, he said, so we'll have to be a little more patient to find out if we'll get a perfect Christmas this year in Montreal.

With this year's first snowfall waiting until November, Montrealers may be curious (or even concerned) about whether our Christmas this year will be green or white. Thankfully, Environment Canada is here to help, with their rigorously calculated predictions based on years of wintry weather data. They've determined the chances of getting a white Christmas for many locations across Canada, including Montreal.

Environment Canada has even devised a category adorably called "Perfect Christmas," which they define as a Christmas Day with at least two centimetres of snow on the ground AND measurable snowfall sometime during the day.

Quebecers might not be able to celebrate Christmas as they had planned, but at least it will be pretty. The Weather Network's Quebec forecast calls for a possibly "perfect" holiday thanks to an incoming weather system that's poised to bring some snowfall to the province.

In a Thursday report, the Network said Montreal has a 100% chance of a white Christmas.
