You can road trip from Montreal to a majestic, crystal-clear grotto with Mediterranean vibes
Did someone say road trip? If you're ready to hop in the car and explore somewhere new, this road trip from Montreal would be a great way to end the summer.
In Ontario, you can visit a dreamy swimming spot with crystal clear, turquoise water that looks more like it belongs in Greece or Italy than Canada.
Located on the shores of the Georgian Bay, the Grotto is a magical swimming area with stunning blue water with major Mediterranean vibes.
The Grotto is part of Bruce Peninsula National Park in Tobermory, Ontario. Officially known as the Grotto and Indian Head Cove, this popular swimming spot draws visitors for its scenic views and hiking trails.
The park is a road trip away from Montreal, albeit a long one — it's about an eight-and-a-half-hour drive from Montreal, or about a day of travel.
The trek is worth it, though — at the park, you can expect to see the towering cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment and the incredible blue waters of Georgian Bay.
The Grotto is a cave with a natural pool of clear blue water, while Indian Head Cove is a scenic inlet located next to the Grotto. Both attractions can be reached by hiking from Cyprus Lake.
The hike to the Grotto and Indian Head Cove is about one hour round trip. Along the way, you'll see wetlands, ancient cedar trees, orchids and ferns, birds, and more nature and wildlife.
The cave itself is carved from ancient limestone and filled with the crystal clear, turquoise waters of the bay. You can walk along a ledge inside the cave or take a swim inside. Do note, though, that the waters here can be quite chilly.
The Grotto is a popular spot to visit during the summer. For this reason, a parking reservation is required to ensure you're able to visit. Parks Canada notes that when parking lots are full, there is no other access to the park.
Parking reservations are required from May 1 to October 31, and are available in four-hour slots. They can be made online or by phone.
Besides the Grotto, there are plenty of things to do in Tobermory for a fun stay. There are many hiking trails in the area, including the famous Bruce Trail, the oldest and longest footpath in Canada, which offers linear and loop hikes and side trails to explore.
The nearby Fathom Five National Marine Park also offers a chance to explore the beautiful waters of the area. Take a boat out to Flowerpot Island and see unique rock formations, caves and a light station for a day of adventure.
The small town of Tobermory is also a great place to wander through. Enjoy some fish and chips from the town's popular Fish and Chip Place, peruse the quaint shops for souvenirs, gifts and more, or stop in at the local ice cream parlour for a sweet treat.
