Quebec Police Released Their Road & Trail Accident Tally For The 2022 Construction Holiday

13 people died on the road and trail during the 2022 construction vacation, one more than during the same period last year, according to Quebec police, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

The SQ counted 11 total collisions in its jurisdiction during the two-week holiday, this year from July 27 to August 7. Of the 13 deaths, 12 took place on the province's roads, compared to nine in 2021.

Quebec Police Presence Will Be Beefed Up On The Roads This Weekend

Police will be paying closer attention to the roads over the next two weekends. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) says its officers will be out on roads and highways to catch travellers who are speeding or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The Quebec police force says speed and impaired driving "remain the main causes of fatal collisions" in the province.

Last year, authorities recorded nine fatal crashes during the Saint-Jean and Canada Day weekends.

Quebecers May Join The Trucker Convoys & Police Are Warning About Traffic Problems

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is warning of possible traffic on Quebec roads as a trucker convoy heads towards Ottawa on Friday and Saturday, January 27 and 28. The provincial police force says it's deploying officers to affected areas to "avoid any overflow" as truck drivers approach the capital. It's asking residents to plan their trips before departing.

Drivers are converging on Ottawa in protest of the federal government's vaccination requirement for truck drivers entering Canada. Unvaccinated truckers crossing the border are still allowed in the country if they're citizens, permanent residents, or registered under the Indian Act, but have to follow testing and quarantine requirements. These rules took effect on January 15.

This weekend is shaping up to be a Montreal traffic nightmare with tons of road closures affecting key stretches of highway.

According to Mobilité Montreal, "major obstacles will be put in place during the weekend, particularly on Autoroute 25 north and south in the Louis-Hippolyte-La-Fontaine Tunnel, on Autoroute 40 westbound between the Laurentides and Décarie Interchanges and on route 136 east between the Turcot Interchange and the Ville-Marie Tunnel."
