VIA Rail announced Friday that its Ocean line between Montreal and Halifax would relaunch in August following a more than year-long suspension due to the pandemic.

The last VIA Rail Ocean line train left Halifax on March 13, 2020.

On Wednesday morning, Quebec Education Minister Jean-François Roberge and the Minister for Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Isabelle Charest announced the province's back-to-school plan for this year. Officials are aiming for the "most normal possible start to the school year for students and staff."

"Our hope is that from day one, everything will be in place for students to return to their school as they knew it," Roberge said in a press release.

In an announcement Monday, Minister for Higher Education Danielle McCann called on Quebec universities and CEGEPs to prepare for the return of students to campus this fall — including the elimination of two-metre social distancing "in all classrooms and common areas."

"There is now a real possibility that the start of the school year will be in-person on Quebec's college and university campuses," McCann stated in a press release.

With Canada’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout facing criticism, only 25% of Quebecers think the pandemic will be over a year from now, according to a new survey from the Association for Canadian Studies.

The Leger poll of 1,559 Canadians, conducted from January 29 to 31, found over half of Quebecers (52%) think it will be two years before things get back to normal. Meanwhile, 17% say it’ll take five years or more.

An online petition on the National Assembly's website is calling for increased protocols and measures for faculty and students in schools across Quebec with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the petition, "the protective measures in place in schools are insufficient and that the appearance of the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus (B117) can lead to more serious consequences for young people."
