We're here. It's harvest season. The fields of southern Quebec are at peak bloom and attracting visitors from throughout the province. And as fun as it is to walk through the flowering meadows, it's probably just as much fun to pick your own flowers and build your own bouquet. That's just what this u-pick flower farm just an hour from Montreal offers.

Year after year, in August or so, the Au Beau Pré flower farm, located in Saint-Anicet, opens its fields to the public to share in its bounty.

The many-coloured dahlias dominate the Montérégie institution, but visitors will find about fifty species in total to choose from.

The sunflowers — a perennial favourite — have been in bloom since the beginning of July and are now available for picking.

At a price of $1.75 each or $15 per dozen, flower lovers can stroll quietly through the fields, scissors in hand.

The site is open from Thursday to Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The family business provides the scissors but recommends bringing a container to store the picked flowers.

Flower enthusiasts have been able to visit the site since July 25. It closes for the season at the end of September.

And for the real gardeners, this is also the time to rummage through the "huge, life-size catalogue" and reserve dahlia tubers for next summer.

The farmers behind the idea are environmentally conscious and practise the "slow flower" movement, which, according to the movement's website, aims to "reclaim the act of flower growing" by "[connecting] consumers with the source of their flowers, putting a human face of the flower farmer and floral designer behind each bouquet or centerpiece."

The idea is that "the value of local, seasonal and sustainably-grown flowers is heightened when there is transparent origin labeling of all botanicals sold to consumers and professional florists."

So if you're looking to bring a little natural beauty into your home, this is the place to be.
