American President Donald Trump congratulated Quebec's new premier, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, on social media on Tuesday morning.

The post comes 22 days after the sovereigntist Parti Québécois won enough seats in the Oct. 5 provincial election to form a minority government.

Trump attached a news article by the Irish Times, titled Separatists win Quebec provincial election in blow to Mark Carney, to his post.

The trade war and the American president's influence loomed over the electoral campaign.

Outgoing premier Christine Fréchette had warned the U.S. could be interfering in the election, before she backtracked.

St-Pierre Plamondon repeatedly criticized his opponents, saying they were trying to capitalize on the fear and instability sowed by the American president and his tariffs.

A few days before the electoral campaign began, St-Pierre Plamondon said he would not hold his promised referendum on Quebec independence until after Trump left the White House in 2029.
