Montreal police arrested 15 people and issued 60 tickets following last night's hockey game, which saw the Montreal Canadiens eliminate the Vegas Golden Knights and advance to the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1993.

The game also happened to fall on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, days ahead of Montreal becoming a COVID-19 green zone, as a full strawberry supermoon illuminated the night sky.

The arrests were for assault, obstruction of police work and armed assault on police officers, according to Julien Lévesque, a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM). 

There were also eight cases of mischief on different police vehicles.

At around 11:59 p.m., the SPVM tweeted that things were being thrown at them. Lévesque confirmed that police used tear gas to disperse crowds and videos show a group of officers in riot gear marching through the area around the Bell Centre. 

The quad surrounding the Bell Centre also had to be closed off due to too many people, according to an SPVM tweet.

Lévesque said two police officers suffered minor injuries.
