Quebec Announced Strict New Rules For Stores & Malls During Holiday Shopping

Here's what to expect.
Staff Writer

Deputy Premier Geneviève Guilbault has announced a series of new rules for Quebec shopping malls and stores during the holiday shopping season.

As of December 4, measures to limit capacity will be tightened and there will be an increased police presence "in certain places, particularly at times that are known to be very busy," Guilbault explained.

She also said CNESST officers would "intensify their visits."

This combination of factors, we hope, will ensure that our stores can remain open and will not become additional outbreak sites.

Capacity limits will be based on the floor area of the business and need to be clearly displayed.

According to the government's regulations, "the calculation for the maximum number of customers authorized in the shopping centre and store: floor area accessible to customers in m 2 ÷ 20 m 2"

Stores will also be required to "limit access to the premises, control the number of people in the facility, and provide for traffic management measures," through "floor markings" and "one-way traffic corridors," for example.

"As with everything else, the way we shop will have to be a little different this year, if we want to ensure that the spread of the virus is limited," said Health Minister Chrisitan Dubé in a statement.

"Traffic management should make physical distancing between customers and workers possible. At all times, it is the businesses' responsibility to apply the rules and that of the customers to follow them."
