Quebec Protesters Are Taking To The Streets Of 3 Cities Saturday To Demand Rent Control
It's Tenants' Day in Quebec, according to Regroupement des comités logement et associations de locataires du Québec (RCLALQ) and Québec solidaire — and that means protests are scheduled in three cities with the goal of convincing the government to implement rent control measures.
A January report from Rentals.ca and Bullpen Research & Consulting said average rent in the province increased by almost 15% annually between December 2019 and December 2020 to about $1,630 per month.

"The mechanisms built into our current laws to regulate rent increases are dangerously inefficient, giving landlords free rein to make abusive hikes for profit," reads the Facebook event page for the protests, which are set to take place in Montreal, Quebec City and Saint-Hyacinthe.
"The cost of housing has exploded over the past few years all over Québec."
The Tenants' Day demonstrations come one day after a Montreal rally saw more than 200 people turn out to support the residents of Manoir Lafontaine in the Plateau who currently believe they are at risk of renoviction.
So far, over 1,000 people have responded to the Facebook event for the Tenants' Day demonstration in Montreal.
