If You See 14 Light Beams On Mount Royal On Sunday, Remember The Victims Of Polytechnique
On Sunday, you'll be able to see 14 beams of light shining atop Mount Royal. If they catch your eye, stop to remember the 14 victims who lost their lives during the 1989 "Montreal Massacre."
Mayor Valérie Plante recently announced that the City of Montreal would continue to illuminate the Mount Royal Summit every year in memory of the 1989 shooting at École Polytechnique, one of Canada’s leading engineering schools.
The anti-feminist attack was the impetus for the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, which is now recognized in Canada every December 6.

The names of the 14 victims who were killed at École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989 are:
- Geneviève Bergeron;
- Hélène Colgan;
- Nathalie Croteau;
- Barbara Daigneault;
- Anne-Marie Edward;
- Maud Haviernick;
- Maryse Laganière, the school's employee;
- Maryse Leclair;
- Anne-Marie Lemay;
- Sonia Pelletier;
- Michèle Richard;
- Annie St-Arneault;
- Annie Turcotte;
- and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
In her tweets, Mayor Plante also said the city would be unveiling Place des Montréalaises, a new Montreal installation honouring groundbreaking Quebec women as well as the 14 victims of the tragic shooting.
"The future Place des Montréalaises will also make it possible to pay permanent tribute to the 14 female victims," Plante said.
"A unique, gentle concept for these women whose names we will never forget."
