Former Montrealer and current California Senator Kamala Harris is projected to become the next vice president of the United States and locals are taking to social media to share their pride. That includes Quebec Premier François Legault, who offered his congratulations to Harris on Twitter.

"I congratulate the newly President-elect, [Joe Biden], for his campaign and his victory in the presidential election," Legault wrote.

"I also congratulate the Vice-President-elect, Ms. Kamala Harris, who spent part of her youth in Montreal."

[Kamala Harris], we hope to see you soon. You will always be welcome in Quebec.

The premier offered an invitation to the senator to one day return to visit her former home.

Legault's focus in the days after the election, however, has been on underlining Quebec's strong economic ties to the United States and expressing his willingness to work with the next president.

"I will work with the new administration to make our relationship more prosperous and to become the green battery of Northeast America," he wrote on Saturday.
