In this new world, expect remote jobs to transform life in Montreal. For previous generations, having a serious career meant waking up and commuting to a big grey office building. Your cubicle would be one amongst a sea of cubicles. The receptionist would ask whether you had a case of the Mondays. You'd receive obnoxious memos from your three managers.
The coffee would give you uncontrollable heart palpations and confusion. The copy machine would be on the fritz. It was all very much like Office Space, I'm sure.
But now, thanks to a dramatic shift in workplace culture, you can have an amazing career right from the comfort of your own home.
Working from home has its challenges, of course. Many people work better when they're sharing a physical space with others, motivating each other, and sharing ideas.
But that hasn't stopped major companies like Twitter and Facebook from announcing that a lot of their staff will be working from home permanently even after the pandemic.
And it's not hard to see why: Zoom and Slack meetings in your pyjamas. Commuting from your bedroom to your workplace in seconds. Not having to pack a lunch. Never having to engage in workplace drama. It all sounds fantastic.
So, here are seven work-from-home jobs in Montreal that pay more than minimum wage.
Fraud & Credit Analyst
Salary: $20 per hour
BrainFinance is looking for enthusiastic fraud and credit analysts to work the evening shift.
This person will be responsible for hunting down and parsing through educational and financial data to assess the "creditworthiness" of borrowers.
Applicants must have at least a year of experience in loan underwriting, consumer lending, personal banking, or similar jobs.
Video Game Tester
Salary: $13.60 – $16.10 per hour
This job pays only slightly more than minimum wage, but you're playing video games, so come on.
Due to the pandemic, Keywords Studios is offering temporary remote video game testing positions and you must be in the Montreal area to be considered.
All you need is a passion for video games, a powerful computer, reliable internet, and a high school diploma.
Online English Teacher
Salary: $25 – $31 per hour
Teach English from the comfort of your own home with TipTop ESL.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree. Don't have TEFL/TESOL or CELTA qualifications? Don't worry. All you need to do is complete a short online course after being hired. No classroom experience required.
Salary: $16 – $29 per hour
This company is looking for real, honest-to-God gumshoes to join the team.
Think about it. You could be an actual rule-flouting, femme fatale-investigating private eye! Just like Sam Spade or Harriet the Spy.
Qualifications for the job include five years of surveillance experience, a valid private investigator license, and "reliable high-quality modern surveillance equipment," so these people do not appear to be messing around.
The application says this is remote work, but it also says you need a "reliable, inconspicuous vehicle," so it's safe to assume you'll occasionally have to leave your home for this one — probably to do stakeouts in a trench coat and fancy hat.
Enumerator for the CMHC
Salary: Starting from $19.25 per hour, based on experience
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is hiring casual workers to help with ongoing research on affordable housing.
They're looking for people to bring their research and data collection skills to work for up to 37.5 hours a week from August to November. Training is included.
Customer Service Administrator Representative
Salary: Reps typically earn $500 – $1,200 per week
Remote Flexible Jobs is a company that offers — wait for it — remote jobs at flexible hours.
They're looking to hire people to participate in studies, do data entry, customer service work, and other tasks.
Moodle Product Specialist
Salary: $60,000 – $80,000 per year
Catalyst IT is an Australian company looking to establish a presence in Canada.
It's looking for someone with experience in Moodle, a free and open-source learning management system, to join their team.
The successful applicant will use their IT skills to "help educators and administrators to apply Moodle to deliver the highest in educational outcomes."
A passion for e-learning and an interest in new technologies would be an asset.
