Quebec City Is Going To Ring Bells & Blast Sirens All At Once To Thank Essential Workers

It'll be a "symphony of gratitude."
Staff Writer

As a show of "gratitude," Quebec City will come alive with the sound of church bells, sirens, and car horns on Christmas Eve to honour those who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

"What a year we have had," said Régis Labeaume, mayor of Quebec City, in a statement, "but we will come out stronger and more resilient!"

This year, our bells [...] echo our solidarity, in a symphony of gratitude.

Cardinal Gérald Cyprien Lacroix, Archbishop of Quebec

Essential workers in Quebec have made innumerable sacrifices for everyone this year and this small feel-good show of gratitude is one way that the provincial capital will honour them.

"At 8 p.m. on December 24, I invite all the citizens of Quebec to join us in listening to this hymn dedicated to essential workers in Quebec," said the mayor.

The local police and fire departments will also sound their sirens.

Even the city's bus network will get in on the festivities, broadcasting "a message of recognition" to all passengers.

"It is thanks to their sustained efforts that we have been able to maintain [bus] service throughout the country, in particular by strengthening the health measures in place and by adapting our operations to the context of the health crisis", said Rémy Normand, President of the RTC.
