A 16-year-old has died from COVID-19, CHU Sainte-Justine confirmed in a statement to MTL Blog. This patient is believed to be the youngest Quebecer to die from the disease caused by the coronavirus. 

While the hospital's statement says it can't legally provide any information that might identify the patient, it does say, "people who die at a young age from COVID-19 are usually people who had significant comorbidities."

The last widely reported instance of a Quebec teenager dying from COVID-19 was in August when, according to CTV News, a 19-year-old man died at the Pierre-Le Gardeur Hospital in Terrebonne from complications due to the coronavirus. 

Overall, Quebecers aged 10 to 19 account for just 11.8% of all COVID-19 cases in the province.

In an April 7 press conference, Montreal Public Health Director Mylène Drouin gave her sympathies to the family of the teenager. But she reminded parents that children don't typically develop a severe form of the illness unless they have pre-existing conditions.
