The next Vice President of the United States might be someone with ties to the city. After weeks of teasing, Democratic candidate for President Joe Biden has chosen his running mate in the 2020 election: California Senator Kamala Harris, who spent her teenage years in Montreal.

Harris will go up against current Vice President Mike Pence. If elected, she would be the first woman and first person of colour to hold that office.

I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked [Kamala Harris] — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate.

Harris was born in California but later moved to Montreal with her mother, Dr. Shyamala Harris, who worked at the Jewish General Hospital and McGill University.

Before serving in the Senate, Harris was the Attorney General for California, in which role she famously officiated the first same-sex wedding in the state following the defeat of the state's ban.
