Hey Quebec drivers, brace yourselves — Quebec gas prices are set to rise tomorrow, but we've got the scoop on where you can still fill up for less. If you've been tracking gas prices in Quebec, you'll want to plan your fill-up strategically to avoid paying more at the pump.

What's happening?

According to Gas Wizard, starting tomorrow, August 31, gas prices in Montreal are expected to rise by 2 cents per litre. If you're in Montreal, expect to pay around 161.9 cents per litre for regular gas, 191.9 cents for premium, and 170.9 cents for diesel. Quebec City is set to remain stable, with no changes expected to the current prices. However, provincewide, things are going up.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Montreal: Regular gas rises to 161.9 cents per litre tomorrow.
  • Quebec City: No change; regular gas remains at 158.9 cents per litre tomorrow.
  • Provincewide: Regular gas is currently averaging 160.6 cents per litre — up 0.2 cents from yesterday, according to GasBuddy.

Where to fill up for less

If you're looking to save on your next fill-up, Gas Buddy has also listed some of the cheapest stations in Quebec:

  • Ultramar in Chicoutimi: Regular gas is priced at 139.4 cents per litre.
  • Esso in Saint-Lin-Laurentides: Regular gas is available at 139.9 cents per litre.
  • Harnois in Kahnawake: Regular gas is priced at 148.0 cents per litre.
  • Couche-Tard in Gatineau: Regular gas is available at 148.3 cents per litre.

Expert insights

We reached out to gas analyst Dan McTeague for more information on what to expect in the coming weeks. According to McTeague, while tomorrow's price hike is a small inconvenience, the bigger picture offers some relief. "The real news is that in two weeks, we go back to winter blend gasoline, which will almost certainly see pump prices for gasoline drop by 5-7 cents a litre," McTeague explains. However, he also notes that diesel prices are likely to rise by a similar amount.

National context

According to the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), the national average for gas prices today is 156.2 cents per litre. This is still below the year's high of 172.4 cents per litre back in April, but it's a good idea to fill up before tomorrow's increase hits.

What's next?

With prices set to rise tomorrow, your best bet is to fill up today if you're in Montreal or take advantage of current provincewide prices before they continue to inch upward. For those in Quebec City, you might not see a change, but it's always good to keep an eye on the cheapest stations mentioned above.

Remember: Prices can vary slightly by location, so always check your local gas station before filling up.
