A flight carrying Ukrainians fleeing the war with Russia is scheduled to arrive in Montreal from Poland on Sunday, May 29. It will be the second flight chartered by the federal government to bring people who are eligible for the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) to the country.

The first plane arrived in Winnipeg on May 23 with 328 Ukrainian passengers. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who is of Ukrainian descent, welcomed them.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau travelled to Ukraine Sunday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trudeau's office confirmed to MTL Blog. Trudeau will use the surprise visit to "reaffirm Canada’s unwavering support for the Ukrainian people," a spokesperson said.

The visit wasn't on the prime minister's public itinerary.

Couche-Tard is the latest company to either pull out of or pause work in Russia in protest of President Vladimir Putin's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. The Quebec-based company said on March 7 that it's suspending operations in all its stores in Russia effective immediately.

The 38 stores in Saint Petersburg, Murmansk (in northwestern Russia) and Pskov (southwest of Saint Petersburg near the border with Estonia) were operating under the Circle K brand.

On Sunday, February 27, the Government of Canada's minister of foreign affairs, Mélanie Joly, announced the country's plan to send Ukraine $25 million of equipment for its soldiers.

"Ukraine has asked for more equipment to keep their soldiers safe. They need helmets, body armour and gas masks. Canada is delivering just that with an additional $25M worth of protective gear. And there will be more," Joly tweeted.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, calling the military action "an attack on democracy, on international law, on human rights and on freedom."

He announced a new round of what he called "severe" sanctions that target "58 individuals and entities including members of the Russian elite and their family members," as well as Russian banks.
