A new global ranking of the world's top cities just came out, and Montreal didn't fare too well.

Oxford Economics recently released its 2025 Global Cities IndexGlobal Cities Index, which measures the world's 1,000 largest urban economies across five major categories: economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance.

Montreal tenants may be feeling the pinch a little more than most, even as rent prices cool across the country.

According to Zumper's latest Canadian Rent Report, released on April 14, median rent prices fell across Canada for the sixth month in a row. One-bedroom units dropped by 0.8% to $1,835, and two-bedroom pads slipped 0.9% to $2,265. Year-over-year, those prices are down by nearly 3%.

A new report just ranked Canada's coolest cities — and it looks like Montreal still has plenty of street cred.

Toronto, on the other hand, didn't exactly make the splash it was hoping for. The rankings, based on a study conducted by Betway and released on March 25, considered factors like median age, vegan and vegetarian restaurants, hidden-gem eateries, record stores, live music events, and tattoo parlors. Toronto landed in a disappointing seventh place with an index score of 19.52 — trailing behind cities like Ottawa, Calgary, and even Edmonton. Yikes.

When it comes to the best cities in the world for work-life balance, Canada seems to stack up pretty well, with three cities landing in a new global ranking — but apparently, Montreal missed the memo.

This year's Global Work-Life Balance City Index by real estate site Blueground placed Ottawa — yes, the city that fun forgot — in a shocking #5 spot globally, making it the highest-ranked city in Canada for work-life balance. Toronto followed at #14, while Vancouver rounded out the trio at #22.

Canada is known for being a friendly and welcoming country, and it turns out we've got the numbers to back it up. A recent study measuring the world's friendliest cities for non-residents dropped, and Montreal and Toronto managed to not only secure a spot on the list, but also rank in the top 10.

Preply, a language learning app and e-learning platform, is behind the ranking of 53 cities. The learning language service analyzed six metrics to compile the list: visitor return rates, safety ratings, LGBTQ+ equality, ease of communicating through a common language, community respect and overall happiness.
