The best universities in Canada in 2024 were ranked and several Quebec schools managed to make the cut.

Maclean's, a Canadian news publication that covers topics about Canadian politics, popular culture, and current events, released its annual university ranking of the best schools across Canada by faculty awards and McGill University secured the second spot overall. The ranking was based on a five-year tally (2018 to 2022) of the number of full-time professors, per 1,000, who have won national awards.

Maclean's dropped its annual Canadian university ranking by reputation in the fall of 2022 and while some schools scored high, others did not — one of which is right here in Quebec.

The reputation survey, which combines all Canadian university's undergraduate, comprehensive and medical doctoral categories, assesses the schools on quality and innovation via faculty and senior administrators.

Montreal universities managed to secure top spots in a ranking of the best Canadian schools based on reputation. However, in a more recent ranking focused on social and environmental sustainability, higher education institutions including McGill and Concordia appear to have a lot of work to do.

The QS World University Rankings released its first-ever global report on the best universities based on sustainability and while Montreal may not have performed too well, a couple other Canadian spots made up for it.

Maclean's ranked the best universities in Canada by reputation with a total of 49 schools making the cut. Maclean's surveyed faculty, senior administrators and business leaders across Canada regarding their views on quality and innovation across Canadian schools to properly curate the list.

A total of three categories determined the ranking including overall quality, innovation and perceived "leaders of tomorrow." Montreal's esteemed McGill university scored the fourth spot with Université de Montréal ranking eighth. So, how did all 49 schools measure up?
