quartier des spectacles

There's a new way to make the most of Montreal's longest season, and it's right in the heart of downtown.

Kicking off this weekend, the city has turned part of the Quartier des Spectacles into an elaborate winter slide park that's open to the public. The best part? All six refrigerated hills are totally free to use.

How does that Earth, Wind & Fire song go? "Do you remember, the 21st night of September? Ba-dee-ya, something, something, something. Ba-dee-ya, never was a cloudy day..." or something like that.

Who really knows what that song means? But it's right about one thing: September 21 (and the surrounding weekend) is worth singing about — not only for its cloudless skies, but for its fun, fabulous, and free events happening in Montreal all weekend long.

September in Montreal is so much more than just the end of summer, the winding down of festival season, and the dreaded return to the school year. The city is still alive and full of lingering energy from the warmer months.

From festivals to comedy shows to rooftop parties, there are tons of fun activities left to do in Montreal this month and — just like in August — so many of them are completely free.

Winter in Montreal is when the city turns the cold into a carnival of lights. From February 29 to March 10, the city is throwing a party so bright and warm there's no need to escape the chill, you can just celebrate it.

The CeraVe Skating Loop is back by popular demand, with an elevated, 300-metre-long track. Skaters can enjoy the city views surrounded by LED lights and music, making each lap an experience rather than just exercise. The Tim Hortons chalet will have skate rentals and, for those needing a break, the SAQ bistro is serving up hot drinks and snacks.

Headliners include the hilarious Ali Wong, internationally acclaimed Russell Peters, British comedy sensation Jack Whitehall, the fabulous Jonathan Van Ness and the dynamic drag duo Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamo, among many others.

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (FIJM; Montreal Jazz Festival) has released its 2023 lineup. Attendees can expect a 10-day extravaganza "jam packed with gems" says festival programming director Maurin Auxéméry.

"It sounds cliché in the festival world, but it's worth saying because it's so true: we are incredibly proud to present a truly balanced program," he said in a press release.

Now, they're unmissable. Two monolithic black towers joined by a spindly metal lattice now occupy what used to be empty sky in the Montreal cityscape. This is Maestria, a new condo development rising out of the Quartier des Spectacles like conjoined grim reapers.

Their design is certainly bold. Developers say that metal structure between them will be the highest sky bridge in Quebec, but access will mostly be limited to an elite few.

Brrr! Do you feel those chilly temperatures out there? The beginning of winter can be a real mood killer, so our city is offering a free experience in the Quartier des Spectacles to brighten your dreary days. From December 1 to March 5, 2023, Montrealers can celebrate the icy season with the return of the popular Luminothérapie installations. The centrepiece this year is an interactive experience on downtown's Esplanade Tranquille skating rink.

"More than ever, this year's installations for the 13th edition will highlight the unique personality of our metropolis: nordic, festive, cultural and creative. Luminothérapie participates brilliantly in creating a stimulating environment that will encourage many people to come downtown during the cold season," Mayor Valérie Plante said in a press release.

Montreal's biggest Christmas market, the Grand Marché de Noël, is taking it up a notch with a new holiday-themed pop-up restaurant this year. In addition to the usual food stations with snacks and mulled wine, you'll find l'Orangerie in a green building behind the Winter Gardens and the big Christmas tree.
