The part of the city most Montrealers know as the "Gay Village" wants people to stop calling it that, a post on its official Instagram account says.

Instead, it asks to be called "the Village of Montreal" and identifies itself as a 2SLGBTQ+ village.*

The Village of Montreal — one of the largest LGBTQ2+ villages in the world — is calling for more awareness about the fluidity and range of sex and gender identities that exist. 

"You may be used to calling me the Gay Village. But in 2021, I'd like that to change. Because sexual and gender inclusion and diversity is very important to me," the Instagram post reads.

The post explains what each letter, number and symbol in 2SLGBTQ+ means.
