Quebec Is Announcing New Holiday Rules Tomorrow

Legault announced the news in an interview with 98.5 FM.
Contributing Writer

During an interview with Paul Arcand on 98.5 FM this Monday morning, Premier François Legault shared that the Quebec government feels "obligated" to add restrictive measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in the province.

We're told such new rules will be announced on Tuesday afternoon and that they will "not go as far as" what the measures were like during the full lockdown Quebec saw this past spring.

"We've learned since the spring," the premier said — referring to the social distancing, mask-wearing, and working from home that the majority of Quebec's population has now gotten used to.

Legault brought up the fact that the government is "looking into" the idea of closing non-essential stores for a period of time during the holidays.

Among other implied ideas during the premier's interview, he touched upon the idea that families could potentially be allowed to meet in outdoor public spaces for the holidays if all public health protocols are followed.

"Someone who wants to go to a park to meet friends and family, to be at a distance of two meters, with a mask, outside where it is less dangerous, can we do it? We should have those answers by tomorrow afternoon. We're going to watch."

At this moment in time, nothing is definite regarding outdoor meetups.

Pointing out his admiration for German chancellor Angela Merkel, Legault said her decision to close all non-essential businesses until January 10 "might be similar to what will be announced [for Quebec] tomorrow."
