This Montreal Market Will Make You Think You’re On Holiday In A Botanical Boho Beachtown

In the heart of the Old Port, by Place du Génie, there is a farmers market meets restaurant meets terrasse called Marché des Éclusiers that will instantly transport you to your favourite beachtown — whether that's Montañita in Ecuador, Taghazout in Morocco or Nimbin in Australia.

You know this type of place: beautiful florals at your disposal for photoshoots, water to walk along, hippies to befriend, good vibes to soak in — and surf's up all day long.

If you're missing these sorts of destinations because international travel is limited right now, then a trip to Marché des Éclusiers could be exactly what you need.

It has the aesthetic of Midsommar if nothing scary had gone on... just lovely flower crowns, peasant blouses and greenery.

"The goal of the Marché is to create a community of producers, traders and consumers conscious of their diet, their ecological footprint and the sustainable development of local products," according to the Old Port of Montreal website.

At the farmers market, you'll meet local farmers selling everything from cheese to eggplants to garlic to radishes.

At the restaurant, you'll find delicious farm-to-table (or, as it's called on the site, "field to plate") cuisine made from ingredients you can purchase at the market. 

There are also ongoing events that play into the "hippie market" theme, like a new moon ritual purification.  

But you can always just swing by for a cocktail at the bar or a cup of coffee.

There are plenty of spots where you can chill out and take photos that will convince your friends you've joined a coven or commune.

Tie-dye surfboards and guitars are suspended seemingly from the air as part of the decor, bicycles are displayed along the wall and atop a canopy of dangling flowers.

Plants sit on swings made of rope.

And, yes, of course there's macrame.

Colourful details, such as knit chairs and fringed phones, add a sweet and pretty touch.

String lights shine overhead.

Plus, there's a great view of the canal.

Ultimately, though, it all comes back to local, fresh and eco-responsible products.

"[We're] committed to promoting Quebec’s rich history of nutritious, delicious, locally grown agricultural and hand crafted artisanal products," reads the website.

For the 2020 season, Marché des Éclusiers is open until the end of October.

The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. and the farmers market is every Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The terrasse is newly heated so you don't need to worry about cooler weather.
