Paths Along Montreal's Lachine Canal Will Be Cleared Of Snow For You This Winter

Huge sections "will now be fully accessible during the winter."
Staff Writer

Winter bikers are getting an early Christmas present from Parks Canada and the Sud-Ouest borough. Huge sections of Montreal's Lachine Canal bike path will soon be fully accessible even after the worst snowstorm.

Clearing the bike path of snow has been a demand of the Coalition Mobilité Active Montréal for quite some time and the organization is "grateful" for this move, according to spokesperson Dan Lambert.

This [...] will not only benefit cyclists but the entire population, who will be able to take advantage of grooming to practice various winter activities.

Benoit Dorias, Sud-Ouest borough mayor

Officials hope that the Lachine Canal site will be "teeming with winter activities" in the new year.

In the Sud-Ouest, a 2.5-kilometre section will be cleared of snow "on the north side [...] from avenue Atwater to rue de la Commune."

Approximately 10 kilometres of the Lachine Canal path will also be cleared in the west, from avenue Dollard to Old Montreal.

According to Saint-Paul-Émard–Saint-Henri-Ouest borough councillor Alain Vaillancourt, "the snow-cleared trail will be more than three times the distance that was included in the 2017-2019 pilot project."

All kinds of winter activities are encouraged including biking, snowshoeing, and a walk en plein air.

Snow removal operations will begin in mid-January.
