The Miracle du 13 Septembre Is Calling On All Montrealers To Leave Food Outside Their Home

A food drive of epic proportions is happening in Montreal and you don't even have to leave your house to participate. On September 13, 2020, all Montrealers are invited to take part in perhaps the city's biggest-ever food drive: the "Miracle du 13 Septembre." Thousands of volunteers will be driving around every single one of the island's boroughs and municipalities, as well as Laval and communities on the South Shore, to pick up a non-perishable food item that you leave on your doorstep!

"In May, there were 19% of adults living in food-insecure households in Montreal (1 out of 5)," said the event's organizers.

"The September 13th Miracle is a food drive organized by our community to help people in our community who are in need of food."

The goal is to collect enough food to stock the city's food banks and charity organizations. Local organizations have been incredibly strained by the pandemic and organizers hope this food drive provides some relief.

Most importantly, the food drive won't put anyone into contact with each other because volunteers will simply pick up whatever non-perishable item that you've left outside your door.

"This food drive gives us all a way to contribute and participate in feeding our communities and supporting each other during this crisis," said Gillian Aitken, lead volunteer.

Similar events in Ontario saw huge participation numbers. In Windsor-Essex, millions of pounds of food were collected.

Event organizers in Montreal hope to achieve similar goals but given that the metropolitan area is much larger than that of Windsor-Essex, they hope that even more food is collected.

To participate, you simply have to leave a non-perishable food item outside your front door starting at noon on September 13. Make sure to leave them in clear view.

Volunteers will be travelling around Montreal throughout the day, picking up your generous donations.

The organization is looking for more volunteers and is taking applications for four positions: team captains, donation collectors, donation sorters, and delivery drivers.

Potential volunteers can sign up online.
