Environment Canada put the Montreal area under a severe thunderstorm watch on Monday morning.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain this afternoon," the federal weather agency wrote.

"Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall," it continued.

Environment Canada's forecast for the city shows a "high" chance of precipitation until 8 p.m., a peak temperature of 29 C and humidex values ranging from 27 to 37.
