Environment Canada has issued not one, but two weather warnings for Montreal.
The federal weather agency has declared a heat warning for the Greater Montreal Area as highs are expected to exceed the 30 degree Celsius mark with humidex levels reaching up to 43.
EnviroCan is urging residents to remain indoors as much as possible, and to avoid excessive activities and exercises, especially if performed outdoors. Furthermore, you should remain as hydrated as possible with consistent water breaks.
As if the heat warning wasn't enough, Montreal is also under a severe thunderstorm watch. Environment Canada issued the severe thunderstorm watch at 9:36 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16.
"This afternoon and evening, conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain."
The federal weather agency indicated that the strong gusts and hail can damage property and cause injury. Additionally, strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
EnviroCan also indicated that heavy downpours could cause flash flooding, and with Montreal streets flooding last week, more water pooling and ponded roads are surely feasible this time around, too.
Residents should opt to remain indoors and halt any water-related activities due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water. Environment Canada also warned about possible lightning strikes. "Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!"
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
