Montreal received its fair share of snowfall this past weekend but it isn't over yet. Despite Eastern Canada receiving a rather mild start to the winter, it appears as if the weather forecast is now catching up to the colder season.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Greater Montreal Area (Island of Montreal, Laval, Châteaguay and Longueuil) warning of additional snowfall starting late in the day on Tuesday, January 9.

"A major storm developing over Texas will move up toward the province of Quebec this week. Over the southern part of the province, precipitation will begin late in the day on Tuesday as snow and may then change over to freezing rain or rain on Wednesday," Environment Canada said.

According to the federal weather agency, regions further north and Eastern Quebec are expected to receive "heavy snowfall with strong winds and blowing snow." Winds will pick up so much that it is expected to cause breaking sea conditions along the coast in Eastern Quebec, EnviroCan said.

Although EnviroCan indicated that it is too early to predict the exact snowfall amount — 30 centimetres or more of snow is possible "in some areas."

Per The Weather Network, a total of 15 centimetres is expected to hit Montreal on January 9, with the possibility of one to three millimetres of rain.

Per Environment Canada, these weather conditions can likely make road travel very difficult. Additionally, "utility outages are possible" and Quebecers are being asked to "consider modifying any non-essential travel plans."

Tuesday will hit a high of minus four degrees Celsius with a "feels like" factor of minus 10 degrees Celsius. Luckily, the cold and snowy front won't last for too long in Montreal as temperatures are expected to hit four degrees C on Wednesday, January 10.
